South Putuo Temple
South Putuo Temple is one of the most popular religious attractions in South Fujian Province, as well as in China, which situated at the foot of Wulao Peak in the south of Xiamen. As located to the south of Putuo Mountain, hence the name.
Backing the evergreen mountain, facing the South China Sea, this temple was first constructed during the late Tang Dynasty (618-907). After 4 major renovations and extensions, it becomes the largest and flourishing temple in south Fujian, which covers an area of 258,000 square meters, and a floorage of 21,270 square meters.
The whole constructor consists of five major parts that built along the axle wire, which are, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Shrine of Sakyamuni Buddha, the Hall of Lotto, the Hall of Great Compassion, and the Surta House. All of them are built on hillsides, rising one higher than another. In addition, the Drum and Bell Towers are located on either side; and the Benevolence Tower on the left side and the Universally Shining Tower on the right correspond with each other, gorgeous and magnificent. The architectural complex with the features of the Buddhist temple looked dignified, implying the meaning of the boundlessness of Buddha Dharma.
