Sun Island Scenic Area is located by northern shore of Songhua River in downtown Harbin. Sun Island Park covers an area of 15 square kilometers and is featured by cultural attractions and natural landscapes. In the north of the scenic area is Sun Island Park, which contains several small animals and plants areas and landscape Lakes. The southern part is featured with museums, galleries and Russian style architecture.
Ice and Snow Hall is a popular site in the park, where one can enjoy modeled ice sculpture statues of Buddhas, heritage buildings, etc., even in hot summer. You can also play ice slides and ice maze inside. Besides the Ice and Snow Hall, Sun Island Museum of Art, Yu Qingcheng Sculpture Park, North China Fine Arts Museum, Yu Zhixue Museum of Art, Russia art galleries and other cultural attractions and exhibition halls for you to explore.
In summer, the island serves as a natural river beach swimming resort and sanatorium area. The island boasts several fine beaches on either bank, such as a profusion of lakes for boating, swimming pools, sunbathing facilities, a fairground, a water world and an arms museum. The middle and northern part of the island is composed of mainly forested areas and a large garden. Various differently styled recreational buildings were built around the “Sun Lake” and the "Lotus Pond". With hidden paths winding throughout, the park is a nice area to stroll and get away from the crowds, being lushly vegetated with trees and flowers. Barbecues and picnics can also be arranged in one of the meadows here. During winter, the Sun Island is used as the playground for various winter sports; Skiing, Hockey, Ice-skating, and Sledding games. What is more important, the renowned annual Snow Carving Festival is held here. Each year from December to next February, Sun Island Scenic Area is the main venue of the International Snow Sculpture Art Expo. During this time, you can enjoy a variety of ice and snow sculpture statues modeling with characters, animals, Western-style buildings, etc., vivid and beautiful.
