Best Place to have a panoramic view of Urumqi in the Urumqi downtown
Hongshan Park, also known as Red Hill Park, is located in the center of the Urumqi and on the east bank of the Urumqi River. It is a natural mountain park with unique classical characteristics. It is like a dragon lying east-west, with its head extending to the Urumqi River. Hongshan is magnificent and steep, which is regarded as the symbol of Urumqi. Hongshan is 910.6 meters above sea level. Red Hill is composed of amaranth sandy conglomerate of Permian Period, hence the name. Climbing to the top of Hongshan Mountain, you can overlook the panoramic view of Urumqi, which is a must-visit place for tourists traveling to Urumqi.
Yuantiao Building was originally a small viewing pavilion, which is the best place to have a panoramic view of Urumqi from a distance. With the rapid development of Urumqi, there are many tall buildings in Urumqi. So in 1992, this Yuantiao Building was rebuilt, which is an imitation of the Qing ancient building. It 21.95 meters high with three floors, and it is surrounded by a 138-meter richly ornamented corridor. Standing on the top of the Yuantiao Building, you will have a panoramic view of Urumqi, from the West Bridge to the Santun Monument, from South Railway Station to Carp Hill. You can see the streets, plants, flowers, cars in the roads as well as the Tianshan Mountains and Mount Bogda in the distance.
The ancient temple complex in Hongshan were built around 1797(Qing Dynasty). The original buildings are arranged from east to west from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain. There is Giant Buddha Temple in the east, Sanhuang Temple in the middle, and Dizang Temple in the west. There is also the Jade Emperor Temple(Yuhuang Temple) in the ravine between the Yuantiao Building and the Hongshan Pagoda. Every temple fair, temples and buildings of Hongshan Temple are all open for sacrifice and worshiping.
When Hongshan Park was expanded in 1989, the gate of the ancient temple was in disrepair. In order to protect cultural relics, the gate of the Great Buddha Temple was moved, and the main hall, wing room and scripture library were rebuilt.
The reconstructed Hongshan Giant Buddha Temple consists of the gate, the main hall(Hall of Sakyamuni), the wing room and scripture library. There are six main halls: the Heavenly King Hall, Hall of Sakyamuni, the Guanyin(Avalokitesvara) Hall, the Dizang King Hall, Hall of the God of Wealth and the Thousand Hands Guanyin Hall. There are statues in the Giant Buddha Temple including the statue of Sakyamuni, Maitreya Buddha, Avalokitesvara, Dizang King, Four Heavenly Kings and Eighteen Arhats.
During the Permian period from 270 million to 225 million years ago, Urumqi was a vast inland ancient lake basin, in which a large number of ancient fish, amphibians, birds, insects, arthropods and dense ancient plants flourished. After their death, they were buried by sediment in time, and after complicated geological processes, they became fossils and were completely preserved.
