According to geological research, from the Early Cambrian Period(about 542 million years ago) to the Neogene(about 23 million years ago to 2.6 million years ago), Rainbow Beach's area experienced many plate collisions and structural adjustment, and finally formed the current sedimentary formations.
Eons ago, Rainbow Beach used to be a vast lake. After crustal movement and weathering, it evolved into the most unique Yadan scenery in China. Rock stratum are oxidized by minerals such as iron and manganese, and show red, golden and gray, which is known as the fantastical Yardang of nature’s palette in Xinjiang. There is something more amazing: The Irtysh River separates the two banks into two worlds with colorful Yadan in the northern shore and lush oasis in the southern shore. The Irtysh River flows through the colored hills and the oasis, and the collision between desert and vitality is extremely shocking.
Yadan landform is formed by the combined action of wind erosion and water erosion of Irtysh River for thousands of years. The rock stratum fluctuates like waves and is covered with gullies and folds. Yadan means steep mound in Uighur.
The landform of Rainbow Beach is very special, with Gobi desert, rugged rocks, long-term dryness and prevailing strong winds, which makes the original flat landform mutate into many steep mounds and wide and shallow grooves. This strange landform is called Yadan landform in geology. At the Rainbow Beach, you can walk along the scenic paths to admire the striking layers of red, yellow, gray and purple rocks.
