Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash, the highest peak in the massive Gangdise Mountain Range, is called Gangs Rinpoche in Tibetan language meaning "precious jewel of snows". The peak is very pointed and looks like a pyramid piercing the sky with an altitude over 6,600m (21,654 ft).

 
Seen from the south the vertical ice trough and horizontal rock formation combine as the Buddhist symbol Swastika ' 卐 ', which represents the eternal power of Buddha. More often that not, clouds will gather above the peak, so clear days are thought to be a blessing because local residents can get an unimpeded view. Every year, thousands make a pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash, following a tradition going back thousands of years.

Lake Manasaovar

Lake Manasarovar, located 35 km away from the east of Pulan County in Ngari, is very beautiful with Mount Kailash at its north. The natural scenery here is very beautiful. It was considered as the world’s center by Buddhist believers and Bon believers, and is one of the 3 sacred lakes in Tibet. It is also the freshwater lake with the maximum transparency in China.

 
According to Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma. Hence, in Sanskrit it is called "Manassarovara", which is a combination of the words manas (mind) and sarovara (lake). The lake, in Hindu religious belief, is also supposed to be the summer abode of swans. Considered as sacred birds, the swans represent wisdom and beauty.

 

Lake Banggong Co

Lake Banggong Co means "the long and narrow goose lake" in Tibetan language. It has the highest birds isle in the world. Banggong Co Lake extends from Rutog of Tibet, China to Indian controlled Kashmir. The lake extends from east to west. It is 155 km long, 14 km wide from south to north. The narrowest part is just 5 m. The altitude of the lake surface is 4240 m. It is 57 m deep, with lake area 28714 square kilometers. Lake Banggong Co is an inland lake. The south part of it is freshwater, while the west part where connect with Kashmir is salt.  
 
 
The bird islet where thousands of gulls inhabit is located in the lake. When spring comes, and warm air from the Bay of Bengal blows into the Ngari Plateau, groups of birds that have migrated from the cold plateau to the warm Southern Asian continent in the previous winter fly back to the islet. The best time to observe birds is from May to September.

 

The Ruins of Guge Kingdom

The Ruins of Guge Kingdom is located in today Zhada County, Ngari Prefecture. Guge is said to be the highest ancient kingdom located on the ridge of Tibet. More than 1,000 years ago, a powerful kingdom with a splendid civilization was born in Ngari.

 
 It is the highest ancient kingdom located on the ridge of Tibet. Now the ruins cover an area of 200,000 square meters. The buildings follow the hill to the top in a rigid layout and an imposing manner. The 11-storey castle is more than 300-meter high including houses, caves, pagodas, blockhouses, defense works and tunnels. Guge colored paintings, frescos and sculptures are rich works of a high artistic level and immense research value.

 

Tholing Monastery

Tholing Monastery is famous through Ngari, founded by Yeshi-O, an outstanding King of Guge Kingdom at the beginning of 10th century. It means "to fly and never fall" in Tibetan language. Although it faded after the collapse of the Guge Kingdom, Tholing Monastery still maintains an important place in Tibet after 900 years in consideration of its significance in the second transmission of Buddhism into Tibet.

 
Tholing Monastery combining India, Nepal and the local architectural style, is the study of local architecture, sculpture, painting and other aspects of precious materials.
