As one of Top Ten Tourist Town and an ancient town of the Miao people on a plateau in the mountains of the eastern part of Guizhou Province, Zhenyuan is famous for its long history with many rich and generous cultural relics, making it much like a historic garden. Zhenyuan Ancient Town covers only an area of 3.1 square kilometers but greets you with more than 160 scenic spots including caves, palaces, pavilions, temples and rivers with their unique architecture, exquisite engravings and marvelous natural landscape. The Dragon Boat Festival, held on May 25th of every year, is the most ceremonious celebration in Zhenyuan.

Zhenyuan Ancient Town has a history of more than 2,200 years since 202 BC. It has many magnificent cultural relics and colorful national culture. There are nearly 200 places of interest in the ancient city, including eight guild halls, four caves, eight ancestral temples, nine temples, twelve piers, ancient city wall, Wuwang Cave, four palaces, ancient wells and ancient theaters.

Shiping Mountain

Shiping Mountain, located in the east of Wuyang River in Wuyang Town, Zhenyuan County, Guizhou Province, is majestic and steep. It stretches 2.2 kilometers from east to west, with an altitude of 668.1 meters, with a relative height difference of 204 meters from Wuyang River. There are two main scenic spots on Shiping Mountain, one is Four Palace, and the other is the Fu Ancient City Fall.
 

Ancient Buildings and Ancient Lanes

Zhenyuan has the saying of six rows and ten lanes, which is a true portrayal of people living and working in southwest China in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and also shows the business concept of businessmen at that time. Every door opened by an alley will never face the hall directly, but deliberately turn the door at an angle and face the street obliquely, showing the concept of Fengshui.

Zhenyuan Museum

Zhenyuan Museum was originally a ancestral temple built to commemorate Zou Sizhong, the general of the Qing Dynasty. In 1998, it was used as Zhenyuan Exhibition Hall. In 2011, it was renamed Zhenyuan Museum. Zhenyuan Museum has more than 400 sets of original cultural relics, and some cultural relics have been exhibited in Houqinglong Cave National Architecture Museum, Heping Village Memorial Hall and Zhou Dawen Memorial Hall. Now there are 216 sets of cultural relics in the museum.
 

Tianhou Palace

Tianhou Palace is located in the Xinzhong Street, with Shiping Mountain in the north and Wuyang River in the south. Tianhou Palace was called Mazu Temple in the coastal cities, but it is rare to see Tianhou Palace in the inland. According to research, there are only three Tianhou Palaces, namely Zhijiang in Hunan, Zhenyuan in Guizhou and Jiuzhou in Huangping. However, the Tianhou Palace in Zhenyuan is the most dangerous, the highest and the most beautiful architectural technology among the Tianhou Palaces.
 

Renshou Palace

Renshou Palace was built in the Ming Dynasty, which means the world is peaceful, and people live a long life. In the early days, it was the place where Jiangxi Guild Hall offered sacrifices. During the Qing Dynasty, the Guild Hall moved to Wanshou Palace. Later, it was demolished and used to build the People's Bank, and it has been used ever since. Now it is the county exhibition hall of intangible cultural heritage.  
 

Eight Guild Halls

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the famous merchants from 15 provinces in China flocked here. Businessmen from all over the world have successively built eight guild halls for their interests. They are Jiangxi Guild Hall, Sichuan Guild Hall, Fujian Guild Hall, Guizhou Guild Hall, Jiangnan Guild Hall(Jiangsu and Anhui), Hunan and Hubei Guild Hall, Qin Jin Guild Hall (Shaanxi and Shanxi Guild Hall) and Guangdong and Guangdong Guild Hall (Guangdong and Guangxi Guild Hall).
 

Ancient Docks

There were 25 ancient docks in Zhenyuan Ancient Town during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which is rare in the world. It is divided into commercial docks, tax docks, official docks, military docks, worship docks, rice docks and other special business docks. There are 12 existing docks, namely Yumen Wharf, Daheguan Wharf, Fucheng Wharf, Chenghuangmiao Wharf, Chongzikou Wharf, Rice Wharf, Tianhou Palace Wharf, Ximen(Panlong Bridge) Wharf, Shangbeimen Wharf, Yangliuwan Wharf, Jixiang Temple Wharf and Weicheng Wharf.

He Courtyard

He Courtyard is a Ming Dynasty building. Located in the lane of Chongzikou in Zhenyuan Ancient City, there are 16 rooms in the He Courtyard, with the combination of Chinese and western elements in style. It can accommodate 50 persons for dining. The courtyard is quaint and quiet, and it is a good place for leisure, meeting, dining and accommodation.
 

Qinglong Cave

Qinglong Cave is one of the most famous sigtseeing nearby Zhenyuan. It is not a cave rather than a group of construction covering an area of 20,000 square meters. It is really a wonderful masterpiece of human beings, combining the nature items and man-made temples. The constructions stretch over one li (0.5 km) from north to south, with more than 100 pavilions, terraces and towers - large and small.
 

Wuyang River

Cut through by the Wuyang River, Zhenyuan Ancient Town is divided into two parts: south city and north city, which forms a water town. Hence you will see the importance of Wuyang River for this ancient town. Flowing through the Mt. Miaoling, the charming and lively Wuyang River runs 95 kilometers (about 59 miles) from Huangping to Zhenyuan, finally into Yuanjiang River in Hunan Province. The part in Zhenyuan Ancient Town is the essence of whole part.
 
Taking a cruise on the Wuyang River will bring you one surprise after another. Grotesque gorges, perilous peaks and crystal-like waters present a wonderful picture before you, as if you were entering a wonderland. Secluded caves, gurgling springs, rugged rocks, dangerous passes and spectacular waterfalls interspersed on the mountains of both banks endow the Wuyang River, along with the dangers of Yangtze River and the elegance of Li River in Guilin. Each scenic spot has been given a fanciful name according to their beautiful legends.
 

Nearby Attractions

Gaoguohe River Scenic Area is located in Yangchang Town, Zhenyuan County, 38 kilometers away from the ancient city, with a total length of 5 kilometers, 3 hours of drifting and 11 dangerous beaches. It is an excellent place for summer vacation and drifting leisure.
 

How to Get to Zhenyuan Ancient Town

To get to Zhenyuan Ancient Town from Guiyang, you can take high-speed train to the Sansui Railway Station(taking about 55 minutes), then you can take taxi to the Zhenyuan Ancient Town, taking about 50 minutes.
