Located in the southeastern part of Fuling District, Chongqing, about 40 kilometers from downtown, the Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley (also known as Mt. Wuling Great Rift Valley) is one of China’s most dramatic geological wonders. Formed by intense crustal movement and erosion, this awe-inspiring canyon has been praised as "China’s No.1 Dynamic Canyon."

Covering an area of nearly 30 square kilometers, the scenic area is centered around a 10-kilometer-long karst gorge filled with steep cliffs, underground rivers, deep crevices, waterfalls, and strange rock formations. The core sights include the narrow Qingtianxia Ground Fissure, the towering Copper Wall & Iron Cliff, and the breathtaking Sky Gate Suspension Bridge. With over 95% forest coverage, an average summer temperature of just 22°C, and a negative oxygen ion concentration of 3000/cm³, it is also a top destination for summer escape.

Must-See Attractions

Qingtianxia Ground Fissure 青天峡地缝

This 1,500-meter-long crevice is the crown jewel of the park. At its narrowest, it’s less than 2 meters wide, while its cliffs rise up to 300–700 meters on both sides. Looking up, visitors can only see a sliver of sky. When sunlight breaks through after rain, the light refracts through the mist to create the magical “One-Meter Sunbeam” effect.

 Copper Wall & Iron Cliff

Stretching over a kilometer, these rusty red cliffs rise steeply from the ground, forming one of the most visually striking scenes in the park.

Xiaokui Gate (Little Kui Gate) 小夔门

Located in the eastern section at 1,200 meters above sea level, this gate-like rock formation was sculpted over time by wind and rain. The colorful cliff faces glow beautifully under sunlight, moonlight, or the early morning mist.

Python Mountain

Midway through the canyon, this ridge resembles a giant snake. It’s a vivid example of karst erosion—soft shale layers wore away while harder limestone remained, forming a long, winding mountain ridge.

Chicken Crest Ridge

This jagged limestone formation, shaped by 250-million-year-old tectonic uplift and rainwater corrosion, is named for its resemblance to a rooster’s comb.

Buddha’s Palm Cliff

Beneath Chicken Crest Ridge lies this 200-meter-tall rock wall, resembling the palm of Buddha. Created by uneven erosion of thick and thin limestone layers, it has become a symbolic photo spot.

Sky Gate Suspension Bridge 天门洞桥索

This thrilling bridge spans 180 meters across the most dramatic section of the canyon, with a vertical drop of over 200 meters below. With a steel structure and anti-slip wood planks, it offers a safe but breathtaking walk among the clouds.

General Stone 将军石

Resembling the side profile of General Ba Manzi, a legendary hero of ancient Ba State, this rock was sculpted naturally by water erosion and gravity.

Wuling Master Cableway 武陵泰斗索道

The park’s signature aerial route, this cable car has an incline of 42.6° and a vertical drop of 300 meters over 634 meters of track. Together with the Sky Gate Suspension Bridge, it forms the thrilling “Sky Trail” experience.

The Giant Apes

In the Happy Valley area, two huge stone formations resemble seated apes—one male, one female. They were formed by the collapse of fractured rock layers, creating solitary peaks that mimic giant gorillas watching over the canyon floor.

Travel Tips

  • To save energy, we recommend using the sightseeing shuttle bus and cable car inside the park.
  • Focus on key highlights like Qingtianxia, Sky Gate Bridge, and the canyon walkway for the most immersive experience.
  • Take a short break at the Gu Yue Fang pavilion, where you can enjoy scenic views and rest your feet.

Suggested Day Trip: Wuling Great Rift Valley + Site of 816 Project

If you have a full day, combine your visit with the nearby Site of 816 Project , just an hour's drive away. Built secretly during the Cold War, it’s the world’s largest man-made cave complex, covering 210,000 square meters. Now open to the public, visitors can explore the reactor hall, uranium processing rooms, and more. The cave is a cool 18°C year-round—remember to bring a jacket.
