Hi Maggie,
Still raining in Guilin? So was I what you had imagine, perhaps expecting someone younger, haha You are a lot taller, slimmer and prettier than your photo and in reallife you do not look like Li Na. Overall, Guangxi girls have fairer complexion than those short and darker girls from my province, Guangzhou.
Thought you may want some feedback on the trip :
Bravo Hotel : I would only recommend, for private tour tourists like us, the deluxe rooms where all the foreign tourists are placed. Rooms are new and clean and we got our twin beds. The local tourists stay in the standard rooms wing and they are a noisy bunch and I bet the rooms there are older and full of cigarette smell. The hotel is popular with group tours. The staff also treats you differently if you are from deluxe room. Location is good as it is near the main Zhongsan Lu , Xicheng night market and restaurants. Breakfast is ok, western (deluxe room) and eastern (standard room), comparatively food in eastern has more variety. So lucky we got upgraded otherwise a lot of complaints from us, haha.
Food : The restaurants we like are the Macau and Ah Sang in the night market street (Xicheng Lu). Had a few nice local dishes. Macau is the best, more because of our cantonese tongue. The one where we had lunch with you and Cherry was not good and expensive. We had late lunch at McFound and the lunch menu was limited for choice, nothing special to us. No chance to try other restaurants. Most important to us is good food.
Golf : Although only 60 km away it took us 1.5 hrs before we reach Merryland golf course Xingan using the normal road. I read somewhere that it takes only 40 mins to reach. The government should build a dedicated expressway to cut down driving time. The weather was good, not raining and we chose to walk. Fairway was ok but the greens at the course was mouldy and not well kept. Second day at San Sui was wet, so we had to take golf carts and caddy which were very expensive. The place is very, very scienic but the course design was not professionally done. Overall the 2 courses are rated below those in Guangzhou. In Guanzhou these kind of courses cost only RMB400 to 500 pp weekday with cart and caddy. Now I can understand why not many tourist play golf in Guilin (expensive and not good courses) so they must change to be competitive. Golf has a great potential in Guilin because of scenery.
Night Life : Third night was raining very heavy and after dinner we stopped by at a small western like bar called River Side, just next to Bravo Hotel. Six of us sat outside the bar and drank 'tsing tao' beer (rmb10/- per can). The bill came up to RMB740 so you can imagine how much we drank!! And this was after our red wine and beer during dinner! Anyway we had fun. For a romantic evening, get your BF to bring you there one evening for a beer or too, quite nice especially when thy have a live band performing there.
So that sums up our experiences and hope the information is useful. Would appreciate your comments too.
Cheers,
chung
