Photography Tips for Mt. Huangshan

Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area is located at Tangkou Town, Huangshan District, Huangshan City. Mt. Huangshan, or Yellow Mountain, has been one of the most famous mountains in China since ancient times. It can be divided into Beihai Scenic Area, Xihai Scenic Area, Songgu Scenic Area, Yungu Scenic Area, Yuping Scenic Area, Baiyun Scenic Area and Hot Spring Scenic Area. In 1990, Mt. Huangshan was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Pine trees, oddly –shaped rocks, sea of clouds, and hot spring are called the "Four Wonders" of Mt. Huangshan.
 

Besides that, the sunrise and sunset are also known as the fifth wonder of Mt. Huangshan nowadays. Many photographers come here and shoot the amazing photos every year. On a sunny morning, when the sun is rising from the peaks and the mountain is surrounded by clouds, Mt. Huangshan looks just like a fairyland. Let’s read on to know some photography tips for Mt. Best Points to Photograph the Sunrise

In general, the best points to photograph the sunrise are Beginning-to-Believe Peak (Mushroom Pavilion), Lion Peak (Refreshing Terraces and Dawn Pavilion), Danxia Peak, Bright Summit Peak, Turtle Peak, Jade Screen Peak and Gongyang Peak. But the best points to photograph the sunrise and sunset vary from season to season, due to the different altitude of each spot.
 

  • Spring: Bright Summit Peak, Lion Peak, Refreshing Terraces, Gongyang Peak
     
  • Summer:Bright Summit Peak, Lion Peak, Refreshing Terraces, Danxia Peak, Jade Screen Peak, Turtle Peak, Gongyang Peak
     
  • Autumn: Bright Summit Peak, Lion Peak, Refreshing Terraces, Danxia Peak, Turtle Peak

Sunrise Time

According to our experiences, the sunrise time differs in different seasons:
 

  • Spring: 5:30 am-6:00 am
     
  • Summer: 4:40 am-5:10 am
     
  • Autumn: 4:50 am-5:20 am
     
  • Winter: 5:30 am-6:00 am
     

Hotels Near the Sunrise Points

In order to shoot the most stunning sunrise photos, it is recommended to stay overnight at the top of Mt. Huangshan one day in advance. A comfortable hotel with good location is top selection for photographers. Beihai Hotel, Shilin Hotel, Xihai Hotel, Paiyunlou Hotel, Baiyun Hotel and Yupinglou Hotel are the most popular hotels close to the sunrise viewing points on the mountain.


If you stay in Beihai Hotel or Shilin Hotel in Beihai Scenic Area, the nearest sunrise viewing point is Lion Peak (Refreshing Terraces and Dawn Pavilion), with only 10 minutes’ walking. The most popular Bright Summit Peak is about 30 minutes’ walking from the hotel. And you need to walk for 30 minutes to Gongyang Peak and Beginning-to-Believe Peak.
 

If you stay in Xihai Hotel and Paiyunlou Hotel, the nearest sunrise viewing point is Danxia Peak with about 15 minutes’ walking. It takes 30 minutes to Lion Peak.


If you stay in Baiyun hotel, the nearest sunrise viewing point is Bright Summit Peak with 15 minutes’ walking. Bright Summit Peak is very popular with many tourists, you may consider to Turtle Peak with 20 minutes’ walking where there are less crowded.
 

If you stay in Yupinglou Hotel, the Jade Screen Peak is the closest sunrise viewing point.


If you stay in White Goose Hotel, the nearest sunrise viewing point is Gongyang Peak.

Best Places to Photograph the Sunset

Like the beautiful sunrise, the amazing sunset on Mt. Huangshan is also another attractive highlight for all photographers. The ideal points to view sunset are Bright Summit Peak, Cloud- Dispelling Pavilion, Danxia Peak, Flying-Rock Peak, Fairy-Walking Bridge, Lotus Peak and Turtle Peak. But it varies in each season due to the different altitudes; those peaks with high altitude and wide view are more suitable to see the sunset:
 

  • Spring: Bright Summit Peak, Turtle Peak, Gongyang Peak
     
  • Summer: Bright Summit Peak, Danxia Peak, Turtle Peak, Flying-Rock Peak, Fairy-Walking Bridge
     
  • Autumn: Bright Summit Peak, Danxia Peak, Turtle Peak, Flying-Rock Peak, Fairy-Walking Bridge, Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion
     
  • Winter: Bright Summit Peak, Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Gongyang Peak

Sunset Time

Sunset time on Mt. Huangshan is different throughout the year and often changes in different seasons.
 

  • Spring: 18:30 pm-19:10 pm
     
  • Summer: 19:10 pm-18:00 pm
     
  • Autumn: 18:00 pm-17:00 pm
     
  • Winter: 17:00 pm-18:30 pm


 

Major Photography Places

Bright Summit Peak

Bright Summit Peak is one of the main peaks of Mt. Huangshan, the second highest peak with an altitude of 1860 meters. It is one of the best places to shoot the sea of clouds, sunrise and sunset at every season.
 

Lion Peak

Lion Peak is located in the northwest of Beihai scenic area with an altitude of 1690 meters. It looks like a lying male lion, hence named Lion Peak. Refreshing Terraces in Lion Peak is the most important point to see the scenery of Beihai scenic area and the best point to see the sun rising in the sea of clouds. Dawn Pavilion is also a good point to shoot the sunrise.
 

Danxia Peak

Danxia Peak, one of the 36 peaks with an altitude of 1664 meters, is located at the east of West Grand Canyon. Known for its ochre-colored peak walls, it is not as famous as other points but the scenery there is fantastic. Besides, it is a suitable place to see the sunrise and sunset.

Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion

Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion, located at West Sea Grand Canyon, also known as the Oddly-shaped Rock Gallery, is the ideal point to see the oddly-shaped rocks and shoot the sunset. It is a rectangular pavilion built for tourists to see the scenery of West Sea Scenic Area. Standing in front of the pavilion, you will find yourself being surrounded by arrow-forest peaks and clouds, just like a fairy land.
 

Flying-Rock Peak

Flying-Rock Peak is located in the northwest of the Bright Summit Peak. Due to the geological movement, the upper rock stands in the lower rock with narrow contact area, it seems that the upper rock is flying down from the heaven, so it is called Flying- Rock Peak.

Weather is the most important factor for you to photograph the sunrise and sunset, so please kindly search the weather conditions and sunrise/sunset time before you go to Mt. Huangshan and make sure it is a sunny day with adequate sunlight.
