Turpan, located in the Turpan Basin in Xinjiang, has a hot and arid continental climate in which the precipitation is far less than the potential evaporation. Knowing Climate of the Silk Road is benificial to organize the tour.
July is the hottest month with an average high temperature of 39.7°C (103.5°F) and a maximum as high as 48 C. January is coolest with an average low temperature of -2.2°C (28°F). Monthly rainfall is highest in June (3.3 mm) and lowest in February (0.2 mm). Generally speaking, the area receives little rain during summer but regional heavy rain sometimes causes flooding.
Urumqi has a semi-arid continental climate. The temperature in Urumqi varies greatly between day and night. The average annual temperature is 6.4°Celsius. Winter is cold and temperature averages -15.2°Celsius. Extreme temperatures have ranged from −41.5 °C (−43 °F) to 42.1 °C (108 °F). Its annual precipitation is about 290 millimetres (11.4 in).
Although inhospitable in winter with bone-chilling weather, Urumqi's climate is pleasant in autumn with warm days and cool evenings. The best time to travel in Urumqi is from May to October when flowers are in full bloom and the air is fragrant with ripening fruits.
