Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, also called Xiamen Airport, is officially put into use on October 22, 1983. The construction of Xiamen Airport only took a year and nine months. It is not only the first self-financed airport by the local in China, but also the first airport that use foreign loans to build. It is the only airport in Xiamen, Fujian Province. The passenger throughput of Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport ranked eleventh in the country in 2010.
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is located in the northeastern tip of Xiamen Island, 10 kilometers away from Xiamen city center. It is sited in the heart of Golden Triangle of Southern Fujian and across the sea with Taiwan. The airport faces the sea in three sides, so it gets a beautiful environment and favorable flying conditions. Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport flight zone grades 4E level. It can meet the requirement of taking off and landing of large aircrafts such as the Boeing 747-400.

♦ Infrastructures
There is a runway which is 3400 meters long and 45 meters wide, a parallel taxiway, whose length is 3300 meters and 7 Contact Roads in Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport. The apron area of it is 250,000 square meters, which means it can dock 40 large aircrafts in one time. The terminal area is 149,000 square meters. This airport is one of China's top ten busiest airports. The passenger handling capacity is 10 million per year. The cargo terminal area is 30,000 square meters with an annual cargo handling capacity of 150,000 tons.
♦ History
Xiamen Gaoqi Airport was originally builr in 1941 when the Japanese occupied Xiamen. In the same year on December 5th, a scheduled flight flied from Xiamen to Taipei airport landed in Xiamen Airport. It was also served for military purpose. After the War of resistance Against Japan, it was managed by the Nationalist government and changed into civil airport in 1947. It was placed under the management of the Air Force on February 1949. In the same year on August 24, the last flight flied to Taipei. Then Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport was closed when Xiamen was under of control of the Chinese Communist Party.
In 1950, the airport was reconstructed and expanded by the mayor of Xiamen, Zhang Weizi to "liberate Taiwan" and was completed by the end of 1952. Then it was rebuilt again in 1955. However, as it is within the shelling scope of Kinmen, it could not be fully open and then abandoned. In October 1981, the State Council approved the expansion report of Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport. Meanwhile, with the help of Jiang Zemin, Xiamen Airport received $ 21 million loans from Kuwaiti as funds of construction. On January 10, 1982, Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport started to be built. On October 22, 1983, the airport was officially opened to traffic.
Phase II expansion happened in 1993-1996. The new terminal was designed by the East China Institute and the Canadian B + H Architects.
In 2006 Airport Phase III expansion project will be based on Phase III expansion, covering the flight zone, air traffic control systems, passenger terminal area and cargo area. The expansion project is expected to complete in 2015.
♦ Xiamen 3-day Visa-free Policy
Since 1st April, 2015, Xiamen has carried out a 3-day visa-free policy for foreign travelers from 51 countries. Travelers are allowed to stay for 3 days without a visa on international transit via Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport. Tunnel No.2 is the special gate for visa-free transit travelers in the international arrival hall of the Xiamen Gaoqi international airport.
At present (updated to 13th spetember,2017), the 51 visa-free countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Holland, Luxemburg, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Britain, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Australia Leah, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
