Best time to visit Shanxi

The best time to travel in Shanxi is in spring and autumn, especially in May and from August to October.

Travel to Shanxi in Spring

Spring has large daily range of temperature and much sand blown by the wind in Shanxi. The provincial average temperature is about 10℃.

Pingyao Ancient City (Pingyao): it is the only ancient city in China completely reserved as it was hundreds of years ago without any modern architecture, but only the narrow street flanking with Chinese shops in old style and the road plated with the original stone.
Ming Qing Street (Pingyao): it has hotels offering traditional brick-oven beds, restaurants serving Pingyao famous beef and shops hawking an astonishing array of art wares such as antiques, furniture, ancient coins, Chinese paintings, jade ware, lacquer ware and traditional folk clothing.

Travel to Shanxi in Summer

Summer is short and hot with lots of rain. The provincial temperature in this season is a little high. The temperature of the hottest month July is about 21℃~26℃.

Mt. WutaiTaiyuan): one of the "Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism", rank as the top 10 resorts in China. It takes its name from its unusual topography, consisting of five rounded peaks. 
Nine Dragon Wall (Datong): with 426 glazed tiles fired specially in five different colors, the exquisite design of green wave at bottom is as sea, blue background as sky and white as clouds.

Travel to Shanxi in Autumn

Autumn is short with mild climate in Shanxi. The average temperature of the whole province is about 10℃.

Yungang Grottoes (Datong): one of World Culture Sites, the best preserved sites in China with 53 caves containing over 51,000 stone carvings of Buddha and Buddhist.
Hanging Temple (Datong): stood at the foot of Mt. Hengshan for over one thousand years, leaning on the precipitous mountain face and facing a deep valley, the buildings in this temple are supported by sturdy wooden pillars inserted in holes cut in the mountain body.

Travel to Shanxi in Winter

Winter in Shanxi is long, dry and cold. The temperature in this season seems to be below 0℃ around the whole province.

Jinci Temple (Taiyuan):it has more than 10 ancient architectures. it famous for its quiet environment, charming scenery, marvelous buildings, and the lively article statures.
Rishengchang Exchange Shop (Pingyao): it is the most famous and the first of many banks in Pingyao which was established in 1643. A similar phenomenon occurred in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages.

Some Tips for Traveling in Shanxi

1. The temperature changes a lot in the daytime and night and the air is a little dry in Shanxi, tourists should drink more water and eat more fruit.
2. Shanxi has much sand blown by the wind, tourists should prepare your long sleeve and trousers, also should take your sunglasses, sun helmet, sun cream, lip protector, etc...
3. The climate in Mt. Wutai is changeable, please prepare your warm clothes to avoid catching cold.
