Nyingchi Milin Airport

Nyingchi Milin Airport’s altitude is the lowest among that of the 5 airports in Tibet, but it is most difficult airport to fly in China. It is the third civil airport in Tibet. The Airport elevation is 2,949 meters, belonging to is high-altitude airport. The airport started construction in October, 2003. It officially opened to traffic by the end of 2005. With a total investment of 780 million yuan, the Tibet Autonomous Region is one of the key projects in Tibet, designed annual passenger transport volume of 120,000 passengers. Nyingchi Milin Airport is located at the valley of Yarlung Zangbo River in Milin County, 50 km from Bayi town-the prefectural capital of Nyingchi. The altitude of it ranks No. 12 in China.

 

Basic Information of Nyingchi Milin Airport

 

In 2001, the new project-Nyingchi Airport was approved to construct as a key project of civil aviation and the Tibet Autonomous Region. The site was selected at the side of the Yarlung Zangbo River between two mountains with the altitude of 2951 m. It started construction in October 2003 with a total investment of 780 million yuan, designed for annual passenger transport volume of 120,000 passengers. In in August 2006, the construction was completed and it passed through the test. On September 1, 2006, it officially opened to traffic.

 

In 2007, the first year of Nyingchi airport navigation, the passenger throughput reached 5.3 million.

 

In 2011, the passenger throughput reached 144,000 passengers, which had gone beyond the design capacity. On April 15, 2012, the airport began one-and-a-half-years expansion project. After the expansion, the terminal area will be expanded to 13,500 square meters from 3200 square meters, and passenger throughput will increase to 700,000 passengers.

 

 

Location

Nyingchi Milin Airport is located in the mountain valley, surrounded by perennial altitude over 4000 meters high mountains shrouded by clouds. The airplane can only land and take off in the narrow winding valley. The narrowest flight path ridge distance is less than 4 km to both sides of canyon. In addition, it is often low clouds weather, changing wind direction with wind shear and other disorders associated with airflow. The aircraft can only take off and land in the morning. the annual airworthiness time accumulates only 100 days.
