The Quanzhou Maritime Museum is a fascinating museum in China that focuses on showcasing the rich history of ancient overseas transportation, particularly the Maritime Silk Road, and the diverse economic and cultural exchanges it sparked. It was established back in 1959 and initially housed within the renowned Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou. In 1991, the new main hall was completed on Donghu Street. In 2003, the "Quanzhou Islamic Culture Exhibition Hall" was built on the east side of the main hall. Presently, both the old and new museums collectively span across an expansive area of 35,000 square meters with a construction space of 17,300 square meters and an exhibition area spanning over 11,000 square meters.

Quanzhou Bay Ancient Ship Exhibition Hall

Location: In the old section - Kaiyuan Temple.

It showcases a sea ship from the Song Dynasty that was discovered in Quanzhou Bay back in 1973. This ship, which is the largest and oldest ever found in China, demonstrates advanced shipbuilding techniques like watertight compartments and multi-layered planks. It serves as an important testament to China's ancient maritime civilization. Alongside the ship itself, you can also find various artifacts excavated from it on display, such as ceramics, copper coins, ironware, woodware, bamboo ware, ropes, and more. (Please note: The ancient ship is currently undergoing restoration work and is temporarily closed.)

China Ship World Exhibition Hall

Location: 2nd Floor, Quanzhou Maritime Museum Main Hall. 

It shows the origin of human ships, the famous ship models of various waters in China's history, and the major inventions of ancient shipbuilding and navigation technology.

Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China

Location: 1st Floor, Quanzhou Maritime Museum Main Hall.

It showcases 663 cultural relics, pictures, videos, interactive touch screens, scenes, and other forms of exhibition. These exhibits depict the material and spiritual heritage across time and space barriers from different seas, countries, religions, and ethnic groups. Additionally, they highlight the exchange and dialogue between East Asian traditional agricultural civilization and world maritime commercial civilization in terms of economic and cultural development views.

Quanzhou Religious Stone Carving Hall

Location: 1st Floor, Quanzhou Maritime Museum Main Hall.

It displays hundreds of stone carvings left by foreign immigrants who did business and preached in Quanzhou during the Song and Yuan dynasties, and their descendants. The contents include tombstones, tomb covers, stone statues and various religious temple building components, belonging to several major religions such as ancient Christianity, Hinduism and Manichaeism.

Arabs-Persians in Quanzhou Exhibition Hall

Location: 2nd Floor, Islamic Culture Exhibition Hall. 

It displays the Islamic stone carvings left by the Arabs and Persians who immigrated to Quanzhou during the Song and Yuan dynasties, and introduces several important Arab descendants families who still live in Quanzhou.

Zhuang Hengdai Collection Hall

Location: 3rd Floor, Islamic Culture Exhibition Hall. 

It displays the artworks, souvenirs and medals of honor collected by Mr. Zhuang Hengdai, the former director of the Taiwan Police Department, who was born in Quanzhou.

How to get there

Quanzhou Maritime Museum: You can take bus 19, 22, 25, 41, 44, 202, 203, 604, K502, etc., and get off at Overseas Chinese Sports Center Station (侨乡体育馆站), and walk to the north gate of the Museum (No. 425 Donghu Street).

Quanzhou Bay Ancient Ship Exhibition Hall (inside Kaiyuan Temple): You can take bus 26, 33, 41, 601, 6, K602, etc., and get off at Kaiyuan Temple West Gate Station (开元寺西门站).
