The Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences is located on the Purple Mountain, Xuanwu District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It is the first modern astronomy research institute set up by Chinese. It is here that the researchers find asteroid and comet. In 1950, the Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded. The completion of Purple Mountain Observatory marks the beginning of modern astronomy research in China, where many branches of modern astronomy and observatories in China were born, established and expanded. It is one of the Top Ten Science and Technology Tourism Bases in China. There are hundreds of thousands of books and journals in the Library of Purple Mountain Observatory. It is the largest and most complete library in East Asia.

Purple Mountain

Purple Mountain, also known as Zhongshan Mountain, Zijin Mountain, is called Jinling Mountain in the ancient time. The Purple Mountain is the mother mountain of Nanjing, also one of the Four Famous Mountains in Jiangnan. The Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences is the third highest mountain in the Purple Mountain. Before you get to the observatory, you should climb up the Purple Mountain.
 

The plane trees on the both sides of the Shuixie Road are impressive and beautiful. If you are tired after climbing the mountain, you can take the cableway to relax. How to Get to the Purple Mountain Observatory

If you want to climb the mountain to reach the Purple Mountain Observatory, it will take about 30 minutes to get to the observatory from the plank road built on wooden brackets fixed into cliffs near the Purple Mountain Observatory Cableway. You can also climb to the observatory and take the cableway down.
 

The terminal of the Purple Mountain Cableway is Toutuoling Station, and it will stop at the Purple Mountain Observatory. If you want a relaxed trip to the observatory, you can choose the cableway to reach and turn back.
