Nanluoguxiang is one of the most famous Hutong districts in Beijing. Hutong refer to the old style alleyways where large numbers of one-story courtyard houses are located in Beijing. Many of these areas are now protected in order to preserve their unique architecture. Nanluoguxiang is one of these places, which has proved to be a mix of history, fashion and shops. No wonder it’s a big hit with tourists especially the younger generation.

In recent years, it has become a hot spot in many fashion magazines and many TV shows for location shooting, many foreign visitors in Beijing, it’s listed as a must-visits attractions. It’s said that this area is the third most popular bar street in Beijing behind Sanlitun and Houhai. The smallest bar in Beijing is located here, covering an area of 12 square meters. Its name is "12 Square Meters".

Nanluoguxiang is also an ideal place to eat with plenty of different establishments offering western food such as pizza and coffee. Chinese meals are also available. Several shops in the area will catch your attention with many unique gifts such as plates and coasters featuring artistic designs. There are also many other ornaments for sale including bottles, enamel cups, a selection of ornaments displaying Chairman Mao’s image and creatively designed T-shirts, displaying humorous designs.

【Bar Hopping at Nights】

Behind Sanlitun and Houhai, Nanluoguxiang is also known as the third most popular bar street in Beijing. The bars here are usually small ones, but attractive and warm. Usually, local youn people or foreign visitors come to this place to have fun.

1. Qi Baishi Former Residence Memorial Hall

Located on Yuer Hutong, the Qi Baishi Former Residence Memorial Hall is housed in a traditional courtyard house that dates back to the Qing Dynasty. In 2011, the Beijing Painting Academy restored this historical residence, which had been home to the famous artist Qi Baishi. During his time in Beijing, Qi created many of his most celebrated works. The memorial hall showcases exhibits about the life and art of Qi Baishi, offering a rare glimpse into the living and creative spaces of this great Chinese artist.

2. Mao Dun Former Residence

Mao Dun, one of China's most important modern writers, lived here from 1974 to 1981. His final literary work, My Road to Success, was written in this house. The residence is a two-entry courtyard typical of the Republic of China period. The black marble plaque at the entrance, inscribed with the words "Mao Dun Former Residence," is a distinctive feature of the building.

3. Wen Chengxiang Temple

Built during the Ming Dynasty's Hongwu period (1368–1398), Wen Chengxiang Temple honors Wen Tianxiang, a southern Song dynasty hero who resisted the Yuan Empire's invasion. The temple is located in Fuxue Hutong, just a short walk from Nanluoguxiang. While not directly within the alley, it's close enough for a visit, offering insights into the resistance movements of China's ancient history.

Begin with Yuer Hutong for a visit to the Qi Baishi Memorial Hall, then explore Dongmianhua Hutong and Qin Lao Hutong. You can end your walk at Fuxiang Hutong's "Hello Reading" space for a quiet moment.

Local Experiences: Head to the Central Academy of Drama on Dongmianhua Hutong and discover Beijing's theatrical history. If you're hungry, stop by the famous "Jixiang" restaurant for traditional Beijing cuisine or visit one of the small local eateries for a taste of homemade snacks.

Shichahai Area: Just a short walk from Nanluoguxiang, the Shichahai lakes area offers beautiful scenery. How to get to Nanluoguxiang

By Subway (most convenient and popular way)

Line 6: Take Line 6 and get off at the Nanluoguxiang Station (南锣鼓巷站). From the subway station, use Exit E to reach the entrance of Nanluoguxiang directly. It’s a short walk from the exit to the main street of the area.

Walking: If you're staying nearby, walking to Nanluoguxiang is also a pleasant option. It's located in the Dongcheng District, so if you're in areas like Wangfujing or Qianmen, it would take about 15-20 minutes to walk there, depending on your pace.
