Yichang Climate & Weather

Climate

Yichang is located in a sub-tropical monsoon zone with four distinct seasons. It enjoys abundant sunshine and rainfall, and the average annual temperature is around 15℃ (59℉). June and July are the hottest months as well as the plum rain seasons; a period of unsettled weather with frequent, soaking rains. The average summer temperature is about 25℃ (95℉). Yichang's warm, moist climate makes it an ideal area for growing oranges which are harvested in August. Yichang tourism profits from its pleasant climate; however, the climate can be greatly affected by the geographic characteristics. Yichang is a hilly city, with mountains on its western side and a flat agricultural region to the East. The traditional dragon-boat festival of China has great significance here as it is in memory of a famous citizen of Yichang; the poet Qu Yuan.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit, that is, from March to May and late August to November. The weather changes dramatically in May and June, and rains frequently appear in July and August.

Spring, you should pack sweater or jackets as protection from strong, sometimes cold, winds.

Summer is very hot, and not the best time to visit because the plum rains in this season often disrupt transportation schedules. In summer, besides T-shirts, shorts and sandals, a hat, suntan oil, sunglasses and an umbrella are recommended.

Autumn is probably the best season for visiting Yichang; the weather is favourable and pleasant. . September and October are usually rich with bright sunny days.

Winter is quite cold and wet and not suitable for travel. It is almost always characterized by continuous rain. If you travel to Yichang in winter, (although few people do), heavy, warm clothing will be necessary to protect you from the freezing temperatures.
