Turpan is one of the top three cities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, and is am important site along the Silk Road. It is in the middle of Xinjiang, close to Urumqi in the northwest and Hami in the east. Xinjiang borders on Gansu province and Qinghai, and the distance from Lanzhou to Turpan is about 1718 kilometers, and the distance from Xining is about 1570 kilometers. Urumqi and Turpan are two big cities with airports, but there isn’t nonstop flights between these two cities, maybe it is due to a distance about only 200 kilometers between these two cities. Option 1: by train
Urumqi has two railway stations for passenger use, Urumqi Railway Station and Urumqinan(Urumqi South) Railway Station. Urumqi Railway Station is located in Economic and Technology development zone, and Urumqinan Railway Station is in Shayibake district, which is closer to the city downtown. Turpan has two railway stations for passenger use. Turpan Railway Station and Turpanbei(Turpan North) Railway Station. Turpan Railway Station is located in Daheyan County, Gaochang district, and 50 kilometers away from Turpan downtown. Turpanbei Railway Station is in Gaochang district , close to Turpan Jianhe Airport, about 13 kilometers to the downtown.
If you are in Urumqi downtown, you may take a taxi or take a pubic bus to Urumqi Railway Station and Urumqinan(Urumqi South) Railway Station. From city downtown to Urumqi Railway Station, the distance is between 10-15 kilometers, and the taxi fare is about 30 yuan. In term of public bus, you could take brt 5 public bus to Urumqi Railway Station, which takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes, and its the ticket fare is 2 yuan.
To Urumqinan(Urumqi South) Railway Station, you may go by taxi or by public bus. If you go by bus, you could take No. 537 which takes about 1 hour and costs 1 yuan. If you take a taxi, the driving distance of about 9 kilometers would cost about 20 yuan.
Decades of trains traveling between Urumqi and Turpan are available from 06:00 to 24:00, and the journey takes 1-2 hours, and ticket fare of train is from 24 yuan to 106 yuan. There are four types of train, Z train, T train, D train and K train. K train is fast train, D train is high speed bullet train which is the fast among these four types of train, T train is pretty fast train and Z train is non-stop train which may be not available right now. Option 2: by bus
Urumqi has about ten bus stations, but you should get to Urumqi Nanjiao Bus Station to take a long distance bus to Turpan. There are two bus trips available to Turpan. One bus trip starts at 08:40, then every half hour, ends at 19:20, while the other one starts at 09:00, then every 20 minutes, and ends at 19:30. The bus takes about 2 hours and costs about 45 yuan. If you are at the downtown, you may take a taxi or a pubic bus to Urumqi Nanjiao Bus Station. The distance between Urumqi Nanjiao Bus Station and city downtown is about 10 kilometers, and taxi fare is within 30 yuan.
