Pingjiang Historic District is just on the south of Humble Administrator’s Garden, with a history of more than 2,500 years. It is the most typical and completely preserved ancient streets existing in Suzhou. Pingjiang Road is just the center of this district, which is a path along Pingjiang River amd totally 1606 meters long. Xuanqiao Lane, Daru Lane, Wei Dao Guan Qian, Zhong Zhangjia Lane and Daxinqiao Lane, ect are just on the east and west side of Pingjiao Roade. Especially, some water lanes are still kept on the east side, water and land paralleling, street neighboring to river, it reflects the southern China watertown features. Compared to Guanqian Street on the west sides, Pingjiang Road has distinctly quiet and quaint atmosphere.
Slowing down and stepping on the stone road, next to the lush camphor trees along the road, seeing stone table and bench as well as exquisite shops, bars or cafe at the roadside, you will have a wonderful experience in this short road. You can see the old houses in the road with white walls, gray tiles, wooden doors and windows which are elegant and charm. This road keeps the original scene. You could find locals living here and them washing in the river.
