Ancient East Gate
Ancient East Gate is one of the four grand gates of Ancient Fenghuang Town that located in the east side, which was originally called Shengheng Gate with a 3.5 meters width and 4 meters height. The lower section of the town gate is made of the mauve sandstone, and the upper section is made of the old bricks, in a semi-arch style.
Tower of the East Gate
The tower of East Gate was built in 1715 during the Qing Dynasty (1,616 A.D.-1,911 A.D.). Taking the front gate in Beijing City as example, the East Gate Tower is a two-storied architecture with a height of 8 meters. The frame structure of the tower is a combination of the "beam supporting structure" and the "through type timber frame".
When entering into the main hall of East Gate Tower, visitors will see a statue of Guanyu, a famous and great figure of the Three Kingdom period. He was a general of the Shu Kingdom. Besides the state of Guanyu, two sub-generals Zhou Chang and Guan Ping are set by his sides respectively.
Tuojiang River
Tuojiang River is the large water system and is considerred the mother river of the Ancient Fenghuang City. With a total length of 96.9 km, it flows across the mid-areas of the town from west to east, around the ancient city wall which located along the south bank, built with the red bricks in an elegant and grand manner.
Tuojiang River reflects the Tu minority buildings along it, which formed a unlimited picture which is describe the traditional southern water town in China. On a perfectly clear day, you can imnagine, the emerald green water reflecs the buildings of the town, like the walls, temples, bridges and stilt houses that remain their old structures and styles of Ming and Qing Dynasties, would grab you back to the time long gone.
Huangsiqiao Ancient Town
First established in 686, during the Tang Dynasty, Huangsiqiao Ancient Town is 24km away to the west of Fenghuang Ancient City. It was originally a sandy town that buildings inside were constructed in local clay. After major renovations during the following centuries, it became a unique stone town as we see today.
Life here is simple and happy. The Miao people living here well-kept the old custom handed down from generation to generation. They plant mulberry to feed the silkworms they cultivate, then use the silk they get from the silkworms to spin and weave cloth. They use the old way to squeeze oil, make paper, grind rice, and carry water in wooden roller vehicles.
In nowadays, the booming tourism in Huangsiqiao Ancient Town makes most residents move out from here. And according to the city development plan, this ancient stone city will turn into a scenic spot without local residents there. It is helpful for Fenghuang's economy, while it is a pity that visitors could not experience the original local lifestyle here.
