The Ministry of Culture regularly dispatches cultural ambassadors to foreign lands. That's why another Chinese stage extravaganza tailor made for overseas audiences is on the road.
On Monday night, a show featuring the traditional folk art of Anhui Province was staged in Belgrade, capital of Serbia.
Before Monday's performance started, Zhang Wanxue, Chinese ambassador to Serbia, made a speech and delivered his best wishes to the audience.
As the curtain was raised, artists from central China's Anhui Province gave a dynamic performance of Huagudeng, a traditional stage art combining dancing, singing, gong and drum beating, and acrobatics.
Huagudeng emerged around one thousand years ago during the Song Dynasty. The popularity of the art form reached its peak in the early Qing Dynasty with its vigorous style.
Dubbed the "Ballet of the East", the core of Huagudeng is its demanding dancing skills. The various movements are mostly a reflection of local people's daily life and work.
Imbued with a strong Chinese flavor, the performance is aimed to ease the homesickness of overseas Chinese during Spring Festival. Also for most members of the Serbian audience, it was a chance to see the diversity of Chinese culture.
