Summary Lugu Lake, where the rare Mosuo matrilineal culture rooted in, will show you a differently fascinating Heaven on earth from the amazing natural beauty to the quaint local tradition. The shores of the lake is inhabited by the Mosuo people who have peculiar customs and ways, up to now still retaining remnants of matriarchal society. Here you will see the superior of female as the leader of a family and how the 'Zouhun'(Men and women are not united by wedlock, each living at the mother's home respectively, yet keeping a casual cohabitation relationship) tradition is remained. Certainly, you will have the opportunity to enjoy other two classic destinations in Yunnan as well.
Day 01 Arrival, Kunming(No meals)
Arrive in Kunming, the start of this tour. Be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for a good rest.

Kunming is the capital city of Yunnan Province. With a history more than 2,400 years, it owes its importance to the fact that it was the gateway to the celebrated Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar and India. The city enjoys a pleasant climate and does its best to live up to its title of the City of Eternal Spring. Its alluring highland scenery, bewitching Karsts landform, varied and exotic habitats and customs, places of historical interest can be found at major scenic spots. Besides, Kunming is the focal point of Yunnan minority culture with 26 ethnic groups like Bai, Dai, Miao in the area.
Day 02 Kunming (B/L)
Depart from hotel in the morning to visit the Stone Forest created by ancient winds and water erosion over millions of years. Drive back to Kunming in the late afternoon.
[ Itinerary Description ]
The Stone Forest is about 120km from Kunming City. It covers an area of 400 square kilometers and includes both large and small stone forests as well as many other scenic spots. It has been known since the Ming Dynasty as the first wonder of the World. As the local says going, if you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time. Approximately 270 million years ago this region was a vast ocean. Over time, the waters retreated and the limestone landscape was left. Due to a process of weathering and erosion, nature has created an art gallery of stone sculpture- present-day Stone Forest. The magnificent, strange and steep landscape creates labyrinthine vistas around each corner. Each formation has a story about animals or people associated with it. Some formations are elegant, some are rugged, and each has its own distinguishing characteristics.
Day 03 Kunming - - Lijiang (B/L/D)
Be transferred to the airport for a short flight to Lijiang where you can walk down the cobblestone streets over 700 years and see the Naxi way of life which chaned little over time. Upon arrival, visit Lijiang Ancient Town and Black Dragon Pool.
[ Itinerary Description ]
The fight will touches down at Lijiang in one hour. Lying in a broad and fertile valley dominated by the snow-mantled peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Lijiang was founded as Dayan, a large Naxi settlement first built during the Southern Song Dynasty eight centuries ago. Once you are in Lijiang, a small and quiet city newly constructed outside the ancient town, you'll find hard to return to the hustle and bustle of the large cities and can not wait to explore the ancient town.
Located at the foot of Elephant Hill, Black Dragon Pool was built in 1737 during the Qing Dynasty. Since the water of the pond is as green as a shining jade. The park was built here with the name of Yuyuan (Jade Spring). It occupies an area of 11,390 square meters and includes many distinctive, ravishing and well-preserved sites like stone-carved lions, white marble bridges, pavilions, temples and steles etc. These antique and exquisite architecture pieces are in the style of Naxi, which will make your every step a bid surprise. Besides, Dongba Culture Research Institute and Dongba Culture Museum are also in the park.
Lijiang Ancient Town is a well-preserved one known for Naxi people's brilliant culture. With a history more han 800 years, the town was firstly built at the interval of the Song Dynasty changed to the Yuan Dynasty, and occupies an area of 3.8 square kilometers. It is built alongside the lie of mountains and the flow of rivers with the ancient water-supply system which still in use today, providing a vary precious sample of the research on ancient architecture. As a result of the multi-culture and the progress of Naxi ethnic group, the buildings in town incorporate the best parts of the architectural traits of Han, Bai and Tibetan into the unique Naxi style. The layout of the town is free and flexible, the houses are close and diverse and the lanes are narrow and meandering. Along the both side of the lanes, there are shops selling superb handicrafts. Here you also have the chance to trace the Ancient Tea-Horse Road.
Day 04 Lijiang (B/L)
In the morning drive about half an hour to visit Jade Dragon Sown Mountain (cable car and green vans available in the scenic area). After lunch, visit Yufeng Temple and Baisha Mural in the ancient capital of Naxi Kingdom in Baisha village.
[ Itinerary Description ]
It will take about half an hour to reach Jade Dragon Sown Mountain which is located at 15km north of Lijiang Ancient Town. It is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, consisting of 13 peaks with the highest one at an altitude of 5,600 meters. Looking from the town, the mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence the name. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a sanctuary for rare animals and wild plants. About one fourth of all the plant species in China can be found here and 20 primeval forest communities shelter a big family of 400 types of trees and 30 kinds of animals which are protected by the state. These species living in different temperature levels create different kinds of views of the mountain. The peaks of the mountain are covered by snow all year around and gain the name of natural glacier museum. You can find rivers and pools formed by the thawed snow flowing along the valley and through the forests.
Continue our visiting after lunch. First built in 1756, Yufeng Temple is located at the southern foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 13km from Lijiang Ancient Town. The temple is surrounded by the flourishing forest and river with the snow mountain at its back. It displays a distinctive architectural style of Han Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and local Naxi Dongba Religion. It is also the witness of the peaceful coexistence of multinational cultures and religions. Today it still plays an important role in local residents religious life.
Baisha Mural is located at Baisha Villages, 10km north of Lijiang Ancient Town. Although the traditional houses do not look impressive, the place was the cradle of Naxi people and ancient capital of Naxi Kingdom. The valuable mural are protected inside Dabaoji Palace and the colored glaze temples. The originality and figures of the mural reflect the different religious cultures and artistic forms of Buddhism, Lamaism, Taoism and local Naxi Dongba religion's development into Naxi School. Each painting includes at least one hundred portraits are not only Buddha but also ordinary people such as bureaucrats, criminals and so on. Many of the scenes and subjects are drawn from people's daily life showing fishing, riding horses, weaving, dancing and casting iron. The photography is forbidden.
Day 05 Lijiang -- Lugu Lake(B/L/D)
Be transferred to Lugu Lake- the remote Paradise on earth in the morning and take a good rest after the long driving for tomorrow's visit.

The distance between Lijiang and Lugu Lake is about 280km, and the bunmy road will take six hours or so.
The Lugu Lake is located between Ninglang County in Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province. It is a plateau lake with a total area of 52 square kilometers, 2,685 meters above sea level. The average depth is 45 meters, the deepest point being 93 meters. The lake remains an uncontaminated plateau lake with the crystal water. The shore of the lake is the hometown to the Musuo people, a branch of the ethnic Naxi group who retain the vestiges of a matriarchal society. The Mosuo, a subgroup of the Naxi, is a matrilineal society whose members engage in traditional 'walking marriages,' in which husband and wife remain in their respective maternal homes and often have more than one partner. The lake is surrounded by green mountains. The best-loved one by the Mosuo people is the Holy Gemu Mountain (the Lion Mountaion). The local people worship it as their Goddess Gemu. On 25th July of each lunar year, they will dress their Sunday best and gather at the foot of the mountain for a great sacrificial rite.

Day 06 Lugu Lake (B/L/D)
A whole-day exploration of Lugu Lake including the lake itself, the isles in the lake and Mosuo family. Stay overnight at Lugu Lake.
[ Itinerary Description ]
Among the five isles in the lake, three are in the territory of Yunnan and two in that of Sichuan. Heiwawudao, Ligedao are metaphorically called 'Three Islands of Ponglai' (Islands of the Immortalsin Chinese mythology). Sitting in the middle of the lake, Heiwawudao Isle is also named 'the Chieftain Island' because Ashaoyun, the chieftain of Yongning, built his villa on the island in the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. Rock, an American scientist, also used to reside on this island. On the south side of the lake stands Liwubidao Island lies at the foot of the Lion Mountain. It is actually a small peninsular formed by the extension of the Lion Mountain into the Lake. A dozen of Mosuo families live on this island so it is possible for the visitors to experience the life on the island and, at the same time, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake. The Mosuo wooden houses are built with square - deged timber in the style of 'jinganshi building', also called Mulengfang (Timber House) which is very graceful.
Day 07 Lugu Lake - - Lijiang (B/L/D)
In the morning drive back to Lijiang after breakfast. Upon arrival, take a visit of Shuhe Ancient Town, another important place in the history of Naxi people's development.

Not far from Lijiang Ancient Town, located Shuhe Ancient Town, another important place in Naxi people's history. In Naxi language it means 'the village at the foot of the high mountain'. Shuhe has witnessed the history of development of Naxi foremen from the farming civilization to the commercial civilization. It had become the distributing center of Naxi foremen in as early as the Tang and Song Dynasties; and it is also an important market town still remained complete on the Ancient Tea-horse Road. Prosperous tea and horse trade, colourful multi-cultures made Naxi develop harmoniously.
Day 08 Lijiang -- Kunming (B)
Be transferred to the airport for the flight back to Kunming in the morning. Upon arrival, take a visit of Western Hill, Dragon Gate and the Village of Ethnic Culture.
[ Itinerary Description ]
Beside the Dianchi Lake, the Village of Ethnic Culture is about 8km from the city proper, and faces the Western Hill across the lake.The hill stretches along more than 40 km (25 miles) of Dianchi Lake and rise to an altitude of 2,350m (7,710 feet). The local people gave the Western Hill the nickname, Sleeping Beauty Hills. The panoramic views are unforgettably beautiful and you will certainly want to bring your camera to capture these glorious scenes. Dragon Gate is the steepest spot in the Western Hill and well worth climbing up the winding old stone stairs because the view is spectacular. When standing at Dragon Gate and seeing the splendid views, you cannot but feel awe-inspired by the vision, dedication, and reverence for nature and the people who created this walkway.
In the Village 25 villages are meant to the built for each of the 25 ethnic minorities in Yunnan, now some of them are still under construction. In the Nationality Song and Dance Hall you can watch the song and dance performances given by minorities. At the Plaza of Unity of Nationalities, in fact it is something like an arena theatre, you can watch not only the song and dance performances, quite different from those you watch in the Nationality Song and Dance Hall, but also the Asian Elephants Show. In the evening the Water-Screen Film will surely make you forget to go back.
Day 09 Departure, Kunming (B)
Bid a fond farewell to Yunnan and be transferred to the airport for the flight to your next stop.
