Day 03 Beijing (B/L)
In the morning drive 75km to visit the Great Wall (Badaling Section) first, then Ming Tombs (Changling Tomb), the once lavish burial chambers of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Peking Roasted Duck is available for your optional dinner.
[ Itinerary Description ]
Just 75km North-west of Beijing, along a smooth and comfortable highway is the Badaling Section of the Great Wall of China . The Great Wall is an internationally admired structure, symbolic of the cruelty of the ancient rulers, and the stoicism and determination of the Chinese people. The construction of the Great Wall began in the 5th century BC. The wall has a total length of 6,700 km, for much of its length following extremely rugged and mountainous terrain, clinging to incredibly precipitous mountainsides; it is truly an engineering masterpiece by any standard, ancient or modern. Starting in the east at Shanhaiguan Pass , it crosses Hebei Province , Beijing , Shanxi Province, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Shaanxi Province , and ending up in Jiayuguan at Gansu Province . It has been claimed that the Great Wall is the only man-made structure which is visible from the moon. Badaling Section is one of the best preserved and most accessible parts, and in its splendour, captures the essence of the Great Wall of China .
The Ming Tombs are located in the northern suburbs of Beijing . Altogether there are thirteen tombs of Ming Dynasty Emperors from the period after the capital was moved from Nanjing to Beijing . Currently, due to archaeological research and restoration, only two tombs, Changling and Dingling are open to the public.
The Lingsi Palace in Changling Tomb's second yard really deserves a visit. This is unique, a magnificent palace made of camphor wood. The ceiling is colorfully painted and supported by sixteen solid camphor posts. The floor is decorated with gold bricks.
Today's dinner has the potential to be the gourmet's highlight of the whole trip if you desire to taste the famous Peking Roasted Duck. From the whole roasted duck to the soup of duck bones, you'll enjoy a banquet made from every part of the duck. Moreover, the chef will demonstrate his skill of cutting the skin of the duck for your entertainment.
Day 04 Beijing (B/L)
In the morning visit those famous sites constructed for 2008 Summer Olympic Games- Beijing National Stadium and National Aquatics Center in Olympic Green . After lunch visit ¡®the most beautiful garden in China '- Summer Palace .
[ Itinerary Description ]
The spectacular Bird's Nest, hailed as the finest arena in the world and the centre-piece of the most expensive Olympics in history, is full of hidden symbolism.
In Chinese mythology, the sun is represented by a circle and the moon by a square, reflected by the shape of the bird's nest and the Water Cube aquatic centre opposite, reinforced when the venues are lit at night, red for the Bird's Nest and blue for the Water Cube. The forms also echo the Chinese symbols for male and female, and are built either side of the north-south axis road which runs in a perfect straight line for three miles through Beijing , centred on the Forbidden City.
Located in the Olympic Green, the US$423 million stadium is the world's largest steel structure. The stadium's design originally called for a capacity of 100,000 people; however 9,000 were removed during a simplification of the design. Architectural critics have said the National Stadium sets standards of construction which may not be surpassed for decades. It is designed to last for 100 years and withstand a force eight magnitude earthquake.
Bird Nest hosted the spectacular Opening and Closing Ceremonies, athletic events, and football final of the 2008 Summer Olympics, from 8 August to 24 August 2008. The stadium also hosted the Opening and Closing ceremonies and athletic events of the 2008 Summer Paralympics from 6 September to 17 September 2008. Though designed for track & field events of the Olympics, the stadium will continue to host sporting events, such as football, afterwards. A shopping mall and a hotel, with rooms overlooking the field, are planned to help increase use after the Olympics. It will become the most important public space in Beijing ."
The National Aquatics Centre, also known as 'The Water Cube', is one of the most dramatic and exciting venues to host sporting events for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The external appearance was inspired by the natural formation of soap bubbles! It utilized state-of-the-art technology and materials to achieve the visually exciting structure, but it's more than just a pretty place.
The innovative design concept successfully addressed four key concerns for the Beijing games; namely economic, social, environmental and natural resources issues. Central to the design philosophy is the core objective of water conservation. Water in Northern China is a valuable commodity, and the outer membrane has self-cleaning and water collection properties. The roof facade can "collect" 10,000 tons of rain water, 70,000 tons of clean water and 60,000 tons of swimming pool water annually. The building uses solar energy to heat the pools and the interior area, and all backwash water is filtered and returned to the swimming pools, saving another 140,000 tons in recycled water a year. The light-weight cladding allowed for a lighter internal structure, using far less steel than a conventional, glass-clad structure, a significant saving. Ground was broken on December 24, 2003, and the Center was completed and handed over for use on January 28, 2008.
The structure had a capacity of 17,000 during the games; reduced to 6,000 for post-Olympics use. Taking up a total land surface of 65,000 square meters, it covers a total of 32,000 square meters (7.9 acres). Although called the Water Cube, the aquatic center is really a cuboid- 178 meters (584 feet) square and 31 meters (102 feet) high. A BIG box of beautiful bubbles.
Swimmers at the Water Cube broke 25 world records during the 2008 Summer Olympics; perhaps the refreshing environment inspires more than just visual appreciation.
In the afternoon, visit the ¡°most beautiful garden in China ¡±- the Summer Palace . If you think, ¡°Oh no! Not another perfect garden.¡± then you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Originally known as the " Garden of Clear Ripples ", the Summer Palace is a magnificent imperial garden located 15 km north of Beijing City . This is the largest ancient preserved garden in China and a former summer retreat for Emperors and the chosen few! The site includes more than 100 ancient style pavilions, mansions, towers, halls, temples, bridges and an enormous clear water lake. What is most enjoyable about the Summer Palace , it is simply a gorgeous place to relax, escape the smoke and crowds of the city and spend an afternoon walking. It is said one could just as easily spend one week out here as one afternoon. Here is a rare chance in Beijing , to lose the crowds and ¡®clear away the cobwebs'.
Day 05 Beijing- - Shanghai (B/L)
Today take a Hutong tour before flying to Shanghai in the afternoon.
