Summary The China Architecture Tour will take you to see and compare the ancient and the new. It includes China 's best-known cities and most architecturally significant sites, beginning in Beijing . Here the Palaces, Temples , Tombs, Great Wall and historic Hutongs will take you to times past; then marvel at the new face of Beijing , rising from ancient roots to challenge the sky with some of the worlds most modern and innovative building designs. Next, walk in the footsteps of latter-day heroes at the spectacular Birds Nest and the Water Cube, venues of the 2008 Games.
On day five, step way back into history when you visit Datong to see ancient cut-rock cave-art. Visit Pingyao to admire this ancient treasure-house of Ming and Qing architecture. For day seven there is a tour of the celebrated Wang Mansion , a well-preserved example of the finest of domestic architecture with more than 50 courtyards and over 1000 rooms. Travel overnight by train to Xi'an , where you'll be awe-struck by the extraordinary Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shihuang. Walk on the imposing and still intact Ancient City Wall then climb the Bell Tower to marvel at its structure and find a memorable view of Xi'an city from the top level.
From ancient Xi'an to modern Shanghai is a leap into the fast lane. With a history of more than 700 years, Shanghai was once the financial centre of the Far East , a playground for foreign adventurers and known as the Whore of the Orient. It has shaken off its past and is now the most dynamic city in the world's fastest-growing nation. It is an exhilarating, vibrant city that is outpacing the government's plans to turn it into the Metropolis of the Orient and a world economic, financial, trading and shipping centre by 2020. Despite the frenetic pace, there are still historic treasures to be found beyond the shadows of the ever-rising city skyline. Shanghai is rich in building styles; Chinese and Western, ancient to ultra-modern, from many ages and cultures including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance. You'll experience the architectural extremes of exquisitely designed historic gardens and fascinating water-towns to the exuberant modern design of the Shanghai Financial Centre where you can gaze in awe at a birds-eye-view of this vibrant city.
Fly to Xiamen to visit the Tolou Earthen Buildings. These fascinating, fortress-like structures are a design unique to this part of China , and since opened to tourism, have attracted much interest from architects and students of design worldwide. Returning to Xiamen, cross by ferry to Gulang Island, a colonial period heritage site, celebrated as a gallery of International architecture, displaying both Chinese and foreign styles. Take pleasure in the peaceful, car-free atmosphere while you wander the meandering pathways.
Next day, enjoy a free at leisure morning till your flight to Hong Kong .

Day 01 Arrival, Beijing (No meals)
Arrive in Beijing , the Capital city of China . Be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Free at leisure for the rest of the day.
Day 02 Beijing (B/L)
Depart from your hotel in the morning to visit Tian'anmen Square, the World's largest urban square and the Forbidden City, the largest and most complete ancient imperial palace in the world. Then stop at the Temple of Heaven for a visit. This evening, Peking Roasted Duck will be your optional dinner.
Day 03 Beijing (B/L)
In the morning, we head forth to the northwest valley of Beijing. Feel peace and solemn when first stop at the Sacred Way. Walk through this 7km path extending from north to south, we'll see statues of ancient government officials and animals figures flanked at both sides. The star attraction of China is its Great Wall, a massive defensive structure built to keep intruders from entering the mainland. The rest day you will have the opportunity to traverse the ancient steps of Mutianyu Section of the Great Wall. If you desire, enjoy Peking Opera tonight.
Day 04 Beijng (B/L)
In the morning visit the sites constructed for 2008 Summer Olympic Games- Beijing National Stadium and National Aquatics Center in Olympic Green . After lunch visit ¡®the most beautiful garden in China '- Summer Palace.
Day 05 Beijing - - Datong (B/L) The last part of your Beijing tour, a trishaw tour of historic Hutongs will take you back to times past. It will give you an insight into the lives of ordinary Chinese people and reveal their social culture in today's Beijing City. Then take train to Datong , experiencing travel by China 's primary method of transportation.
Day 06 Datong (B/L) According to historical records, Datong was founded as Pingcheng in 200BC during the Han Dynasty. It then prospered and became a stop-off for camel caravans moving into Mongolia and beyond. To the South-west, there is a site evident of the long history of Datong . It is called Yungang Grottoes and it is composed of 252 grottoes which contain 51,000 Buddhist statues. Today it is considered one of the best examples of rock-cut architecture which is a collection of cave art that combines traditional Chinese art with Greek and Indian influences. Returning to the city proper, we'll pass by the Nine Dragon Screen.
Day 07 Datong -- Pingyao (B/L)
Leave Datong today, and proceed to Pingyao. Ancient Chinese architects once thought of Pingyao as a treasure house of Chinese architecture. Upon arrival, walk through the ancient Ming and Qing Street- which is used to be the Wall Street of China , admire the Ancient City Wall and Rishengchang Exchange Shop, the first draft bank of China .
Day 08 Pingyao -- Xi'an (B/L)
After a long night of rest in Pingyao, ride on for Wang's Courtyard in Lingshi County . Consisting of 54 courtyards and 1,052 rooms, the Wang's is the epitome of Oriental domestic architecture. Then be transferred back to Pingyao for the overnight train to Xi'an.
Day 09 Xi'an (B/L)
Today is all about Xi'an. Your first destination is Emperor Qin Shihuang's Terra-cotta Army. It has been regarded as the 8th wonder of the world and the most significant excavations of the 20th century. Then get back to city for the Old City Wall and Bell Tower. Tang Dynasty Show with Dinner is available for your optional meal this evening.
Day 10 Xi'an -- Shanghai (B/L)
Take a morning flight to Shanghai. You'll have time to ¡®unwind' in the exquisite beauty of Yuyuan Garden, an expression of filial piety by a Ming Dynasty official, Pan Yunduan, who spent his life savings ensuring his parents would live out their lives in magnificent comfort. In the evening, enjoy the nightlife of Xintiandi, bars and nightclubs in converted 19th century European style houses.
Day 11 Shanghai -- Wuzhen(B/L) After a photo stop at People's Square, the picturesque green space surrounded by buildings on all sides, visit the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall to see the vision for the new Shanghai , complete with exhibits and an impressive scale model of the city planned for the future. Next take a nice walk along the Bund of different architectural styles that include Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance. Have a bird-eye view of the city after ascending Shanghai 's new landmark-Shanghai Financial Centre in the new and developing Lujiazui area. Be transferred to Wuzhen.
Day 12 Wuzhen -- Shanghai -- Xiamen (B/L/D)
After breakfast, tour around Wuzhen Water Town, one of the six existing old-time water towns in Yangtze River delta. Be transferred back to Shanghai for the flight to Xiamen.
Day 13
Xiamen -- Nanjing -- Zhangzhou
(B/L/D)
Drive from Xiamen City to Nanjing County to visit the famous Tuluo in Snail Pit as well as Huaiyuan Building and Hegui Building - the representatives of the round building and square building in the area. Stay overnight in Zhangzhou City for better accommodation facilities than Nanjing Tulou area.
Day 14
Zhangzhou -- Xiamen (B/L)
Be transferred back to Xiamen in the morning. After a good break in hotel, visit Gulang Island off the coast of Xiamen . Gulang is a colonial period heritage site where almost all major architecture styles in the world can be found. Gulang is also famous for being home to China's largest piano museum. Feel at peace while savoring the fresh aroma of the island.
Day 15 Departure, Xiamen -- Hong Kong (B)
Free at leisure until be transferred to the airport for your flight to Hong Kong.
