Grand MOMA

Grand MOMA, famous for its magnificent structure, was the unique residential building ranking into the 2007 American TIME magazine The 10 Best (New & Upcoming) Architectural Marvels list. The other two China modern architectures in this list were Bird Nest and CCTV New Tower.

Located between the 2nd and 3rd Ring Roads, Grand MOMA is a real estate designed by American architect Steven Holl. The outstanding design is an overhanging corridor which connects the 8 buildings together. Moreover, an art hotel and a multi-function cinema add a 3D building space.



Design Idea

1. The building space of Grand MOMA is consisted of 3 parts. 9 buildings in different heights expand on a long size ground. Firstly, the first part is set shops and service facilities which surround the pool. And the second part is gardens on the roof. And the third part is between 16th and 19th floors. The overhanging corridor connect each building and form into a circle.

2. Grand MOMA immerses Broadway Movie factor and brings art cinema into this fashion community. This muiltu-function art cinema is located in the center of the community as the gathering space of residents. Besides, it is also the focus of architectural art.The whole cinema is hanging above the pool. The outside wall can play advertising trailers. The first floor is totally built on stilts, leave the space for residents. And in community, each building has at least one side face this cinema so that people can enjoy movie from different angles.

3. Grand MOMA put focus on the relationship between each building. The overhanging corridor and the central roof garden become the public area for neighbour getting touch with each other, aiming to bring a new neighbour relationship which can be found in the old courtyard.

Architectural Value

1. The design idea comes from a masterpiece named Dancing by French painter Henri Matisse. Surrounding, going through and getting over different space levels is the main character of this community. The corridor creates more chances for neighbour to communicate. Between 16th and 18th floors, besides the visual impact, the corridor is equipped more functional facilities including gym, cafe, bar, library, etc.

2. Grand MOMA offers people a lifestyle combined with film art. It is not only offer people a dwelling houses but also immerse soul into these houses. Grand MOMA helps people to plan they lifestyle combining with an art filed.

3. Nowadays, the warming relationship among neighbour is losing. This new architecture creates a new neighbour relationship. From the traditional one in Beijing courtyard and hutongs, Grand MOMA develops a new relationship which can meet present life rhythm. The new neighbour relationship is a lifestyle which can both ensure the private room as well as the friendly communicate room together.
